Description

Dr. Bindu Nair, Deputy Director of the Basic Research Office in the Department of Defense, will provide an overview of the funding opportunities available from the DoD to support cutting edge basic research.  Researchers across the academic career spectrum, from graduate students to senior faculty, are encouraged to attend this informational session and Q&A.

The Basic Research Office in the Department of Defense oversees a $2.3 billion basic research portfolio, which spans multiple physical and social science and disciplines. The Office also sets research and grant policies, and executes high-impact programs with the Services and DoD Components. Flagship programs like the Vannevar Bush Faculty Fellowships support established investigators in their pursuit of high-risk, ‘blue sky’ research, and the Minerva Research Initiative supports social science research aimed at improving our basic understanding of security, broadly defined. Pilot programs, such as I-Corps@DoD and the Laboratory-University Research Initiative (LUCI), try new ways to support different aspects of the innovation process and engage researchers inside and outside the DoD. Through these investments, the Basic Research Office aims to enrich the basic research ecosystem and foster creativity and new ideas.
