Masters Degree in Human Services Psychology: Applied Behavior Analysis Human Subjects Research

Master’s level students have the opportunity to conduct human subjects use research as part of the applied behavior analysis (ABA) education track. Participants involved in this research effort are individuals admitted to programs either at Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) or the Shafer Center for Early Intervention. The UMBC IRB has created a procedure to document, for UMBC human subjects use research purposes, protocols being conducted at either institution.

Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI)

The use of participants in the KKI setting is overseen and approved by the IRB at the KKI/Johns Hopkins Medical (JHM) Institutions. Prior to an ABA student investigators performing a research activity at KKI, investigators will submit to the Office of Research Protections and Compliance:

  • a brief description of the research project, and
  • a complete copy of the materials approved by the JHM IRB, including the letter of IRB approval for the project, the IRB protocol application, consent document, and any other JHM IRB approved supporting documentation.

All information related to the ABA research will need to be submitted by the student through the Kuali Protocols Portal to document the research project. The student PI and advisor will receive a Kuali notification that UMBC concurs with the IRB approved research at KKI and acknowledge receipt of the JHM approval.

Shafer Center for Early Intervention

Participants involved in research activities conducted at The Shafer Center are overseen and approved by the UMBC IRB. ABA student investigators will follow the UMBC expedited application and review process to obtain human subjects use approval before the research begins.
