OVERVIEW

This is the second UMBC-UMB Partnership Symposium. The goal of this annual event is to actively support establishing meaningful and sustainable research collaboration between our two institutions.

UMB is comprised of the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Law, Pharmacy, and Social Work. UMBC is comprised of the Colleges of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Engineering and Information Technology; Natural and Mathematical Sciences; as well as the Erickson School and the School of Social Work.

The research collaborations between UMBC and UMB build on four decades of meaningful partnership, which have led to substantial interactions:
  • Shared Organizational Infrastructure
  • Shared Research Facilities
  • Dual Campus Degree Programs
  • Research and Innovation Partnership Seed Grants
Sponsored by the Office of Research and Development, UMB, and the Office of the Vice President for Research, UMBC, this Partnership Symposium is the next step in a growing relationship between our two institutions.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Dr. Aaron White is a Biological Psychologist and Neuroscientist and serves as the Senior Scientific Advisor to the Director at the NIH National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). He joined NIAAA in 2008, with a focus on adolescent development, the influence of alcohol and other drugs on it, and strategies for promoting adolescent health.

Dr. White received his Ph.D. from Miami University in Ohio in 1999. His graduate research focused on brain mechanisms underlying alcohol-induced amnesia, i.e. “blackouts”.

In 2001, he completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center and was appointed to the faculty as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. White’s research at Duke focused on the effects of alcohol on adolescent brain function and development, alcohol-induced blackouts in college students, and adolescent substance abuse treatment.

During that time, he was fortunate to help create an online science-focused alcohol education course for college students, called AlcoholEdu, which has been completed by more than 2 million students.

Dr. White has appeared in dozens of educational videos, documentaries, and news stories, delivered hundreds of presentations, and published 50+ scientific articles and book chapters, mostly related to excessive alcohol use and its impact on adolescent brain function and behavior.

He has published two books on adolescent development, one focused on research in psychology and the other on findings from brain science, and a third on the immune system and disease, which was recently translated into Chinese.
