RE: Update on Search for Vice President for Research

I am writing to update you on the progress of UMBC’s search for the Vice President for Research. In October and November of 2012, the search committee reached out to the campus community to gather input on the desired characteristics and qualifications for the Vice President, in order to formulate a position description and advertisement. This description was shared with the search firm that has been reaching out to, and generating interest among, potential candidates.

The committee invites you to participate in this process by nominating individuals who you believe are well qualified for this position. You can do so by sending an e-mail listing the candidate’s name and contact information to UMBCvpr@russellreynolds.com. Please nominate candidates even if you believe that they are not likely apply — the search firm uses these nominations as a guide to get a sense of what the campus community is looking for.

The next step in the search process is for the search committee to develop a short list of candidates who will be invited to off-site interviews. Shortly afterwards, we expect to invite 3-5 finalists for on-campus interviews and meetings with stakeholders and the campus community at large. The search committee will share further details with the campus once these visits are finalized.

Members of the search committee, which are drawn from a variety of academic and administrative units on campus, have already been seeking input from their areas. If you would prefer, you can always contact me, joshi@cs.umbc.edu, to offer any suggestions or comments. I would like to thank the members of the search committee for their commitment and hard work, along with the campus community for the support it has provided to our work.
